Researchers at Northwestern University have discovered a bright flash of light when an egg is fertilized by a sperm. Human egg stockpiles Zinc and during fertilization, makes the decision, to control the level of Zinc. Excess zinc in the egg is released to facilitate the growth into an embryo.

Researchers say, this sudden burst of zinc offers a non-invasive method by which IVF clinics can determine the quality of an egg. The brighter the flash, the healthier the egg and more is the chance of achieving a successful pregnancy.

It is yet to be known, how much Zinc is involved in the process or why this phenomenon happens. Nonetheless, the mineral Zinc seems to play a vital role in the process.
