Terraced houses originated in Europe during the 16th century. They are a row of houses built uniformly along the property line and share side walls with the adjacent properties. Terraced houses are sometimes also called row houses. Houses at the ends are known as End Terrace and usually have a distinct design when compared to those in the middle.
They are commonly found in Europe, Latin America, UK, US, Canada and Australia. Many times these houses were built as public housing and stigmatized to be associated with the working class. The shared walls could be a problem if you have noisy neighbors. They are a plus when it comes to heating and ventilation. Since the side walls are not exposed, the houses heat up faster during winters and cool faster during summers. Since backyards of a mid terrace is not accessible by the side of the property, you may have to carry tools and equipment through the house. Lack of privacy is also mentioned often times when it comes to terraced houses due to the backyards being often face to face with the other row. This may be solved by lining it with tall bushes or putting up fences along the property. Sure terraced houses have some cons but if all goes well, the sense of community that these houses provide is quite unmatched.
