Native Americans used to cultivate sunflowers 3000-5000 years ago as a source for edible seeds and were only produced commercially during 20th century. Young sunflower plants follow the sun during the day to gain enough sunlight for photosynthesis. Sunflower plants can grow up to 300 cm or more. A beautiful garden with a variety of plants and flowers may be your dream but be sure not to plant sunflowers. Sunflowers are allelopathic species with seeds that release toxins into ground that kill of neighboring plants. Each flower head is made up of tiny flowers to better attract pollinators. This also helps in attracting pollinators like the honey-bee as they are more attracted to warmer flowers. Once mature they stop to remain facing east to be warmed by the rising sun. Top sunflower producers are Ukraine and Russia.
Just like the happy sunflowers, we humans can benefit from the energy of the sun as well.
